In Battlefield 2142, every time a player earns a new rank, they are able to choose a new unlock. There are a total of 50 unlocks (40 BF2142 Core Game, 10 NS Booster Pack) and there are different categories of unlocks including class unlocks, squad unlocks, and ability unlocks. Class unlocks are specific to the kit (Recon, Support, etc.) which is being used. Ability unlocks are universal for all the kits. Squad unlocks can only be used by squad leaders and require a certain amount of people in that player's squad to be used. Unlocks are in tiers and require the player to progress up through the tree to unlock higher-level equipment.
A temporary unlock can be awarded to all members of a squad if squad members follow orders directed by the squad leader and heal or resupply their team mates. This type of unlock, known as a "Field Upgrade", persists only until the player disconnects from the server, upon which it is removed from the player's inventory. The Field Upgrade is a sort of ‘try before you buy’ feature, allowing players to experience certain unlocks before they use one of their hard earned unlock credits to unlock it. Certain unlocks are only available after purchasing the Northern Strike booster pack, and they are on top of all the other unlocks in the unlock trees of the core game.
